Your Singapore journey

Building a future in Singapore?

Singapore may already feel like home. Here are the money questions worth asking as your status, your family and your plans change, with links to the official sources.

Applying for PR

  • Eligibility, documents and the application process are set by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
  • Check ICA's website directly for the current requirements for your situation.
  • Financial products do not improve or guarantee PR approval, and I don't provide immigration services.

CPF after becoming a PR

  • As a PR you start contributing to CPF. Contribution rates are graduated during your first years as a PR.
  • Your take-home pay may change, so it's worth revisiting your monthly budget and savings plan.
  • CPF can support housing, healthcare and retirement, and each account has its own rules.
CPF Board

Housing

  • Eligibility to buy HDB flats differs for PR households, and there are conditions to check carefully.
  • Private property purchases involve stamp duties, including ABSD, at rates that depend on your residency status.
  • Plan the deposit, your CPF usage and loan affordability together, before you start viewing homes.

Healthcare & family protection

  • PRs are covered by MediShield Life, which is designed for large hospital bills. It doesn't cover everything.
  • Check what your employer's insurance covers, and what happens to that cover if you change jobs.
  • If family overseas depends on you, think about how your plans would hold up across countries.

Retirement, wherever it is

  • Think about where you might retire. Currency, cost of living and access to healthcare all depend on it.
  • CPF LIFE provides monthly payouts from your payout eligibility age, based on your retirement savings.
  • Savings held in different countries and currencies are easier to manage with a single, joined-up view.
