Your first S$100,000: start with the goal, not the product

A meaningful savings goal becomes clearer when you give it a purpose and a timeline.

Start by deciding what the money is for. A home deposit, family security and long-term wealth each come with different timelines and different levels of risk you can reasonably take.

Next, take stock of what you have already saved, and what you can set aside consistently without touching your emergency buffer. Consistency usually matters more than the size of any single contribution.

Explore a savings-only scenario before considering investments. Investment returns fluctuate, and shorter-term goals may call for a different approach from goals that are many years away.
